Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Total Knee Replacement Surgery: Restoring Mobility and Relieving Pain

A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure whereby the diseased knee joint is replaced with artificial material. The knee is a hinge joint which provides motion at the point where the thigh meets the lower leg. The thigh bone (or femur) abuts the large bone of the lower leg (tibia) at the knee joint. During a total knee replacement, the end of the femur bone is removed and replaced with a metal shell. The end of the lower leg bone (tibia) is also removed and replaced with a channeled plastic piece with a metal stem. Depending on the condition of the kneecap portion of the knee joint, a plastic "button" may also be added under the kneecap surface

Selecting the Type of Knee Replacement Implant Surgery in india

Different companies manufacture different types of knee replacement implants. Your doctor will select one for your knee replacement.

There are two basic types of implant Surgery in India: –

  1. Cemented Knee Replacements: – The most commonly used knee replacements are cemented into the bone. Cemented implants fit very nicely into position, and are immediately solidly fixed into the bone.
  2. Press-Fit Knee Replacements : – Press-fit implants are designed with a rough surface that bone can grow into. Over time the surrounding bone grows into the implant holding it solidly in position.

Total knee replacement, or total knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure in which parts of the knee joint are replaced with artificial parts (prostheses).

A normal knee functions as a hinge joint between the upper leg bone (femur) and lower leg bones (tibia and fibula). The surfaces where these bones meet can become worn out over time, often due to arthritis, which can cause pain and swelling.

Alternatives To Knee Replacement Surgery in india

While total knee replacement can be helpful under the right circumstances, you should discuss the risks, benefits, and alternatives with a doctor. Alternatives to total knee replacement include:

  1. Nonsurgical treatment : – Nonsurgical treatment methods are initially recommended for patients with osteoarthritis or inflammatory arthritis. This includes:
    • Knee bracing or shoe inserts, both of which help align the knee and balance the weight on the joint.
    • Injections, either with a cortisone-like drug or a hyaluronan derivative.
    • Patients with rheumatoid or other inflammatory arthritis should try physical therapy and medicines before considering total knee replacement.
  2. Arthroscopy – Arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which a doctor examines the inside of a joint with a device called an arthroscope. The doctor can repair any damage through small surgical incisions in the skin. Arthroscopy is only helpful for a certain type of knee problems.
  3. Osteotomy – Osteotomy is a surgical procedure that involves cutting the leg bone, realigning it, and allowing to heal. It is used to shift weight from a damaged part of the knee to a normal or less damaged one. Osteotomy is not recommended for patients older than 60 years or for those with inflammatory arthritis (such as rheumatoid arthritis).
