The Beginning

Inspired by the missionary zeal of Bishop Zachariah Mar Dionysius and strengthened by the devotion and commitment of the members of the Orthodox Syrian Christian community at Chennai,,who promoted the registered charitable society in 1982, the Madras Medial Mission strives to participate in the healing ministry by seeking to foster an environment of care, compassion and love that enables it to respond to patient needs in enviable ways.

From its modest beginnings three decades ago, the synergy of proficient practitioners, prudential management and providential guidance has metamorphosed the Madras Medical Mission into an organization of excellence that promotes some of the finest super-speciality medical institutions in India, with superlative infrastructure, leading edge technology and accomplished professionals.

Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery

At MMM, Interventional Cardiology Department through its two state-of-the-art cineless catheterisation laboratories has performed approximately 35,000 procedures till date. In keeping with the cutting edge technology, the placement of drug eluting stents are routine procedures as is the latest in atherectomy. The Cardiac Electro Physiology Laboratory is one of the few in India, with expertise to manage end-stage heart failure by means of the latest electrophysiological techniques and is the busiest cardiac electro-physiology centre in the region dealing with a wide range of diagnostic studies and radiofrequency ablative procedures in adult and paediatric patients.

The Adult and Paediatric Surgical Departments have to credit more than 25,000 operations, a rare distinction of very few hospitals in the world. In keeping with current techniques and technological advancements, Off Pump Coronary Artery Bypass (OPCAB) has come to be an important and common means of surgical revascularization here. This department has performed more than 150 Ross operations in patients aged between 3 months to 70 years. Sir Donald Ross, the pioneer of the Ross Procedure in Cardiac Surgery, in remembrance of the 150 th Ross Procedure, unveiled a plaque in June 2004 at this institute.

The Paediatric Cardiac Surgical Department is a unique facility that handles the entire spectrum of congenital cardiac anomalies from neonates to infants and newborns to adolescents. Approximately 8000 cases of congenital cardiac anomalies with excellent results; the youngest being just 8 hours weighing 1.4 kgs, has been performed here.

Madras Medical Mission is an organization inspired by the missionary zeal of Bishop Zachariah Mar Dionysius, Metropolitan of the Madras Diocese of the Orthodox Church of India. Strengthened by the devotion and commitment of the members of this Community at Chennai (erstwhile Madras city of TamilNadu ) who promoted the registered charitable society in 1982, it strives to participate in the healing ministry by seeking to foster an environment of caring, compassion and love that enables it to respond to patient needs in enviable ways.

Genesis

The mission’s effort to establish an institution to engage in the Ministry of Healing resulted in setting up its first unit relating to cardiac care in June 1987 in the hired premises of another hospital in the Mecca of Health Care in India-Chennai. Within a short period, from this humble abode, the Madras Medical Mission moved in 1995 to its own premises at Mogappair, a residential suburb of Chennai city, an aesthetically designed eight storeyed building around lush green surroundings. Under the patronage of Mother Theresa, this monumental edifice was inaugurated in the presence of luminaries such as Dr.Christiaan, Barnard, pioneer of the Heart Transplant from Africa, Dr.PantpisSakornpant, who has done the largest number of heart and lung transplants in Asia and doyens of the cardiac world, Dr.Dominique Metras (France), Sir Terrence English (U.K), Dr.Richard Engelmen (U.S.A), Sir Donald Ross (U.K.) and many more. The Madras Medical Mission complex with 256 beds (including 75 Intensive Care beds) set amidst landscaped gardens that provide a serene and tranquil environment with modern hi-tech and sophisticated infrastructure, state-of-the-art technology, very high standards of cleanliness and hygiene for quaternary care has won accolades from the international community.

Institute of Liver and Digestive Diseases, Kidney and Organ Transplant is conceived and executed by a team of highly reputed, and dedicated medical experts with extensive training and experience from North America and Europe. The independent adult and paediatric intensive care units with its modern facilities of pendant systems, cardiac output monitoring and haemodialysis are comparable to the best in the world. The Operating rooms, Intensive Care Units are also equipped with the most modern infection control measures in all areas inclusive of Air supply quality by using Hepa Filters, and laminar flows. The excellent facilities and clean, spacious interiors and one to one nursing care makes convalescence for the patient a pleasant and memorable experience.

Institute of Reproductive Medicine & Women’s Health

The expression of MMM’s commitment to the concerns of the lesser privileged unfortunate couples is reflected in the strong clinical base of its second unit – Institute of Reproductive Medicine and Women’s Health. Patients for all types of gynaecological management including Management of Sub-Fertility for both men and women are taken care off with empathy, understanding and emotional support. The best embryology lab in the country is here to provide high technique assisted treatment for couples in need of the same. The Assisted Conception Clinic which is a harbinger of hope for childless couples functions in keeping with the international code of ethics with high success rates. In the short span of 5 years, the institute has 350 successful IVF cycles to its credit.

The Institute of Liver , Digestive Diseases, Kidney and Organ Transplant

The Institute of Liver & Digestive Diseases, Kidney and Organ Transplant at MMM in just 4 years, has performed about 280 Kidney transplants, one liver transplant and even a small intestine transplant. The gastroenterology and liver unit specialises in the management of liver and gastrointestinal disorders. The modern video endoscopy unit handles all advanced procedures for diagnosis and therapy. Patients with liver disease and failure are given specialised care in the liver unit and optimized for liver transplant. Modern interventional radiological procedures, stenting, chemo embolisation of tumours, radio frequency ablations and multi-modality treatment for GI oncology are more than a routine here. The well equipped vascular lab too assesses and treats all complicated vascular cases, breaking records of success.

The MMM complex at Chennai dawns with a prayer at the beautiful prayer hall with its breathtaking stained glass windows, which is a tribute to 13 religions of the world. It is a testimony to our belief in the paramount importance of spiritual health. The trained Chaplains are always accessible to bring a sense of peace and tranquillity to our patients and their families. In rare, tragic instances of loss, the Chaplains stand as pillars of strength to the bereaved family and facilitate arrangements for the funeral or transportation of the body, in deference to the wishes of the family. The department of Medical Social Work provides all the necessary social and psychological support to patients and their families for the mental and emotional well being of patients in the healing process.

Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences

The Madras Medical Mission through its Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences at Pondicherry provides comprehensive and quality medical education with ethical values, to select young men and women who have the dedication to master the art of healing and explore the frontiers of medicine, with a mandate to reach the unreached through compassionate practice, committed teaching and constant research. The institute played a role in the 2004 Tsunami Disaster when the hospital was turned a shelter for hundreds of who had witnessed their homes being washed away, catering to their medical as well as basic needs like food, clothing and most importantly, the humane touch.

This young institution of the Madras Medical Mission is steadily making progress in its quest to provide exemplary health care services to the needy, and to train students to become world-class physicians. The hospital services have kept pace with the development of the college with superspeciality departments of Cardiology, Cardio Thoracic Surgery, Gastroenterology, Neurology, Neuro surgery, Nephrology, Paediatric surgery, Plastic and Reconstructive surgery, Endocrinology, Developmental Paediatrics, and Urology. Within a short period since inception, nineteen departments of the Medical College and hospital have been recognized for post-graduate studies in medical disciplines. The College of Nursing recently established envisions quality nursing personnel to serve the globalmarket.

Poineering

The Madras Medical Mission has to its credit several major pioneering and innovative achievements in the field of multi-organ transplantation and transmyocardial revascularisation including the first Heart Transplant in the private sector, India’s first bi-lateral lung transplant, the country’s first paediatric heart transplantation, India’s first Heart and Lung Transplant and small bowel transplant .

Private – Public Partnership

Extending beyond the national boundaries of India, international collaborations with the developing countries to participate in their health care delivery and that of developed countries is becoming the norm for Madras Medical Mission. MOUs’ have been signed with, to mention a few, the International Children’s Heart Foundation, Memphis, Tennessee, U.S.A; Bethesda Heart Centre at Nigeria for Save a Child’s Heart Project, Nawaloka Hospital, Srilanka and several other countries.

We have also entered into public – private partnership with the Ministries of Health and Family Welfare of several countries including Tanzania, Seychelles, Bangladesh, Fiji, Bahrain, Maldives and Rwanda for treatment of their patients as also for training of their medical and paramedical professionals. Regular exchange programmes are held with leading institutions abroad where doctors from there visit our hospital and our doctors also visit them to learn latest skills and technologies.
